Pond Info Center > Hiding Pond Equipment > Building a Sump Building a Sump to Hide Pond EquipmentIf you are planning to build a large garden pond, you might want to consider constructing a sump. Simply put, a sump is a chamber in the ground where you can house the filter and pump for a pond. This setup can be quite convenient to have because it keeps the filter in a place where it is easily accessible. The reason sumps are useful for large ponds is that the larger sized equipment is usually not submersible and thus can be rather difficult to hide. If the sump is made well, it can also keep all the equipment in it dry. To keep the water out build a lip around the sump, and place the pump on concrete blocks to keep it away from any water that might get on the chamber floor. Also be sure to place a drain pipe with a diameter of at least 4 inches in the sump to remove any water that gets in. Related pond article: Hiding Pond Equipment |
