Overwintering Water LotusWhen the water temperature is consistently less than 55 degrees (or when you notice the lotus stems and leaves turning brown), pull the container out of the water and trim back all the foliage to about 2" over the soil line. Overwintering in the Pond:If your pond WILL NOT FREEZE to the bottom you can overwinter your lotus in the pond. After trimming back the foliage, gently lower the lotus container to the bottom of the pond. You do not want the tuber to freeze so make sure you place it below the freeze line! In the spring when the water temperature is consistently at least 55 degrees (or when new growth appears), gently raise the container back up to the desired growing height. Resume feedings once several arial leaves have developed. Overwintering Indoors:If your pond WILL FREEZE to the bottom you will need to overwinter the lotus indoors. The goal is to keep the lotus cold without allowing it to freeze. Place the container in a cold dark place such as a basement, attached garage or cold storage area. Keep the soil damp all winter. One way to do this is to place damp newspaper over the container and around the stems, then loosely cover it with a garbage bag. (If the lotus is not in a container, gently wrap the tuber in damp newspaper and place in a partially open garbage bag.) Once a week discard the newspaper, check the lotus for signs of rot or mildew and place fresh damp newspaper. Make sure the garbage bag is loose because the plant needs air. In the spring, or when the water temperature is consistently at least 55 degrees, return the lotus to the water at the desired growing height. Resume feedings once several arial leaves have developed. More on Lotus: See our beautiful selection of Lotus Plants and our Lotus Availability List! |
