Hardiness Zones

What is the Hardiness Zone?
The USDA divided the US into 11 zones based on the Average Annual Minimum Temperature in each area. Zone 1 is the coldest and Zone 11 is the warmest. A plant that is grown within its Hardiness Zone should be able to survive outdoors year-round without protection.

Can I order a plant that's not in my Zone?
YES you can! Many people prefer plants that are not within their zone. Some consider the plants annuals - enjoy them for 1 season, toss them out and replace them next year. Of course you can salvage the plants for future seasons by providing extra protection and care such as overwintering them indoors.

Zone isn't everything!
As important as cold tolerance is to a plant, obiviously, there are many other factors that determine the ability of any plant to grow and thrive for YOU. Besides the Hardy Zone (extreme low temp), think - high temperatures, amount of sun, amount of shade, water conditions, presence of fish (or not), size of pond or container garden, etc.
